Jessie has a long-running rivalry with her sister, Misty. Their initial rivalry came from Misty's favorite to win in the Super Contests, while Jessie's was to become the first Gym Leader of Cerulean City. This rivalry eventually faded.
Jessie is the first female Gym Leader to appear in the anime series. She is also the only female Gym Leader in the anime that has been formally introduced and the only one to have Pokemon before the protagonists catch them.
