Benjamin Franklin (1706–1790) and Ann Hathaway (1703–1744) were a married couple who played an important role in the American Revolution.
Benjamin Franklin was born on 17 January 1706 to a poor family in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied for the clergy but never became a pastor. Instead, he took up the printing trade and later found success as a publisher.
In 1723, Franklin married a woman named Deborah Read. The couple had no children. In 1727, he joined a group of friends who were dissatisfied with the treatment of the native people by the British colonials. They called themselves the Junto, and one of its members was Richard Jackson, who would later become Franklin’s business partner.
In 1727, Franklin became the official postmaster for Philadelphia, and in 1729, he assumed the role of publisher of the Pennsylvania Gazette. In 1823, he published Poor Richard’s Almanac, which has been called the first American newspaper.
