Introduction
The MBTI is a psychometric instrument for classifying personality types. It was initially developed by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katharine Briggs based on the theories of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung. The MBTI is a theory-based instrument that identifies four different personality types: extrovert, introvert, sensing, and intuitive. Introversion and extroversion describe a person's preference for being alone or with others respectively. Sensing and intuition describe a person's preference for concrete or abstract thinking respectively.
The MBTI was developed to help people understand themselves better, but it is also recognized as a useful tool for teachers who wish to better understand their students. It is also used by counselors and business executives to better understand their employees.
History
The MBTI personality test was first published in the The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) Manual, by Isabel Briggs Myers and Katherine Briggs, in the United States in the year 1962. The test was originally developed for Isabel Myers who later passed it on to her mother who published it in the United States in the year 1955. Initially an informal tool, the test was used by Isabel Myers' mother for her counseling practice.
