The society has a "standardized test" to determine if a prospective guide is qualified. The test requires that a guide climb the mountain solo, and that he or she show leadership skills and be able to read a topographic map.
Once a candidate has passed the test, he or she can become a certified guide and begin guiding on a voluntary basis. In fact, there are about 20 certified guides in the area - all locals. They are mostly from Boston, New York and Washington DC.
