    Charnia Myers was born in Van Nuys, California on Aug. 1, 1935. Her parents were immigrants from Poland. She had two sisters, Gertrude, who died at age 14, and Marilyn, who is still living. Myers said her father was a violent person who would beat her mother when she came home from work.

    “My father wasn’t a happy person,” she said.

    Myers was married to Raymond Myers for about 10 years. He was a lawyer and an alcoholic and she divorced him after he attacked her one time. Raymond Myers died in 1985. Myers has never remarried and does not have children.

    A family tradition of studying the Bible and the Talmud was passed down to Myers by her grandmother and mother. The Talmud is a book of rabbinical commentary on the Torah, which is the first five books of the Christian Old Testament.

    Myers said her family was “more religious” than most Jewish families. She said they would go to the synagogue every Friday night and all four of them would read their lessons aloud together.
