Ryohei Arai was born on March 24, 1971, in the city of Nagoya , Aichi , Japan . His father was a chief engineer and his mother was a homemaker. He had two younger sisters who died shortly after birth. His family lived in a house that had no electricity until he was four years old due to Japan's economic struggles. Arai attended a local junior high school and then joined a computer science club at Nagoya Institute of Technology (now Nagoya University). He graduated from the university in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in industrial engineering. He then worked as an engineer for an electronics company, but he was not happy with his job and quit to pursue his dream of becoming an entertainer. In 1997, he began working as a supermarket cashier to support his family while he pursued his career as a comedian. In 2001, he debuted as a comedian with Akiba Special!
