The Sandayu is a descendant of the ancient Suryavanshi (Sanskrit: सूर्यवंशी) tribe, a branch of the Kshatriya (or warrior) Brahmin class of India. The name Sandayu is derived from the Sanskrit word for a dark-blue gemstone called sapphire, which the tribe had high regard for. The tribe is also known as the Burhwal (बुहवाल), another name that translates to "the descendants of the Vedic King". The Sandayu is part of the Rajput caste. Sandayu people are originally from the northern and western parts of India, mostly in the state of Punjab and the northernmost regions of Haryana.
The Sandayu's have always been a tough warrior tribe that have been known for their military and political prowess. They were ranked as one of the most powerful tribes in northern India during the 7th-9th century.
