Glassjaw was founded in New Britain, Connecticut, in 1996 by Daryl Palumbo and Brian Chippendale, after the demise of their previous band, The Brood. The pair recorded the band's debut album "Colony of Birchmen" in 1997. In 1999, Glassjaw signed to Epitaph Records and released their second album "Everything Is Easy". The band then embarked on a short tour with fellow Epitaph labelmates Thursday and Luna.
In 2000, Glassjaw released their third studio album "Worship and Tribute", which spawned the hit single "Goddamn". The song was originally intended to be titled "Goddamn It", but the title was changed following a dispute with a legal team.
