What is the Order?
The Order of the Phoenix is a secret organisation founded by Albus Dumbledore in 1997, after he became Headmaster of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The Order was founded primarily as a means of supporting Harry Potter and his friends at Hogwarts, especially during the events surrounding Voldemort's return to power in 1995. The members of the Order of the Phoenix at the time were Albus Dumbledore, Rubeus Hagrid, Minerva McGonagall, Severus Snape, Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Tonks, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew. Harry Potter joined the Order in June of 1997, and was made a full member later that year.
The purpose of the Order is to protect and defend the wizarding world against Dark Wizards and other threats, both magical and non-magical. It also exists to help fight oppression and injustice in all segments of society, and to support those who cannot fight for themselves.
