“You’re going to be working with him,” the host said. “He’s going to be your boss.”
“I’m going to be working with him,” I responded, “but he’s not going to be my boss.”
The host stared at me for a moment. “He’s going to be your boss. You’re going to be his assistant.”
I had just started work at the Overlook Hotel and I was supposed to be doing some basic training with the other newbies. The hotel was being renovated, and some of the old rooms were being converted into guest rooms. The idea was for us to clean them up and make them look nice for the guests.
In the room next door, Jack Torrance was doing the same thing. He was also supposed to be getting some basic training, but he was going a little slower than me, and it looked like he’d be there longer than me. So I was very curious when the host told me that Jack would be my boss.
