Second, there is a big difference between being an observer and "being an observer". A "being an observer" means that you are not actively participating in the action. You are looking at it and trying to understand the behavior and the interaction. A "being an observer" doesn't mean you can't participate in the action and affect it.
So I think this is a misunderstanding of the concept. The folks who described it as "being an observer" were probably thinking of the original function diagram. From that diagram, if you are an observer you are ESTP, if you are a participant you are ESFP (or perhaps ISFP).
So I think they just misunderstood what "being an observer" means. And that's okay, we all learn from our mistakes.
