The Ran-tan personality type may also have been inspired by a real life “demon” named “Ran-tan” who would haunt a Japanese village every few decades. It is said that the demon was a malevolent spirit that would befriend children and lead them astray.
In Japanese folklore, the demon is said to possess children, turn them into animals and take them to a village where they would cause mischief and trouble. It is said the children had a “demon” mark on their faces, and would be “witch-hunted” by the village. They would often be strung up and burned at the stake.
The legendary demon, or “Ran-tan” was said to have lived during the Edo period in Japan. He was also said to live in other villages across Japan and had a reputation for being able to turn himself into a fox.
