Teo was attracted to the position at the zoo because she loves animals and didn’t have to travel as much as she would have if she had taken a job with a different organization. She also felt it would give her more time to volunteer with animals at the zoo.
Teo has spent more than 30 years volunteering at the zoo. She started working there in 1989 as a volunteer at the Women’s Zoo program, which mentors women who want to become zoo volunteers. In 1993, she became the zoo’s senior volunteer coordinator. She eventually started hiring new volunteers and worked with them for about 10 years, until she moved to the zoo’s education department in 2007.
