Ray personality type is ESTP, which means I’m strong, direct, and not afraid to speak my mind. I’m also extroverted and outgoing, so I talk fast and get things done.
My personality is probably one of the main reasons I’m good at writing, and it’s also why I feel so much pressure when I write for a living. I need to create characters that are strong and smart, and yet still vulnerable and flawed. In other words, I need to write complex characters who are dynamic.
The problem comes when I’m in the middle of writing a book and a character doesn’t fit my idea of what he or she should be like.
What if my character is too angry? Too sad? Too self-indulgent? Or is too boring? Or just plain disagreeable?
This is where I throw my hands up in the air and say, “I just don’t know what to do with this person.”
The last thing I want to do is give my readers a character they can’t relate to. “Why bother reading the book?” they might say.
