Nu Er Hong is a fictional character from the novel "Farewell, My Concubine" by the Chinese author, Pu Songling. The novel was a historical fiction about events in the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). However, the story was based on facts and the main protagonist was a real man of that time. The real man was called Yuan Shikai and the name Nu Er Hong means "the fourth of the son".
The character of Nu Er Hong is based on Yuan Shikai and yet he was, according to the official biographical information, not the real person. One of the reasons for this is the fact that Yuan Shikai was very ambitious, which is why he did not want to be compared with someone like Pu Songling.
