As the story progresses, we see Lennie's character development through his relationships with other people. In most cases, he is loyal to those he cares about, although he sometimes acts rashly and he always makes his own decisions based on what he thinks is best for himself and the gang.
Lennie's character development during the story happens when he meets George. Lennie quickly befriends George, but George is not like Lennie. Lennie doesn't understand how to deal with people who are different than him. He also doesn't understand the consequences of his actions. George teaches him that people get hurt when you don't think things through. He also teaches Lennie to be kind to others. When Lennie learns this, he changes his demeanor and tries to be nicer to everyone around him.
