We have a new hurricane track for the Atlantic that has Irma heading towards the Florida Keys, Cuba and the Florida peninsula. This is quite a big change from our previous forecast track which had it heading out to sea.
The new track for Irma also has it bringing heavy rains as it moves through Cuba and the Florida peninsula. This is what was predicted by the GFS model. The new track has Irma making landfall in Florida on Sunday morning with a high impact scenario.
This is what I have been saying all along, Irma will have a much more direct impact on Florida than previously predicted. The GFS model is projecting Irma to produce a storm surge of 4-6 feet in Florida and forecasters are now warning that Irma could be a very dangerous storm.
The GFS model is predicting a high risk of tornados for parts of Florida under the worst case scenario. This is an element of the hurricane that we didn’t consider before.
