The sky was dark, but I could see them. They were close, but not close enough for us to do anything. The last thing I wanted to do was engage them, but that would mean that we would have to turn around. I didn't want to turn around.
"We have to turn around," I said to the others. "We can't risk engaging them, and we will lose if we stay put."
"We won't," said one of the men. He was a former soldier, who had fought in the war. His hands were rough and callused.
"But we're outnumbered," said another man. He was shorter than the soldier, and a little bit older. His face was weathered and scarred. His hair was blond and dirty, and he looked like he hadn't shaved in a long time.
"That's all right," said the soldier, "So far we've never lost to them."
