The protagonist of the story is a young man named Gilbert Blythe. Gilbert lives in a small town in England, and works as a farm hand for his Uncle Oswald. One day, Gilbert falls in love with a beautiful woman named Isabel Gracedew and tells her that he loves her. Gilbert and Isabel get married and live happily together for a while. However, shortly after their wedding, Isabel disappears mysteriously and Gilbert is left to fend for himself and the farm.
At the end of the story, Gilbert decides to pack up, move to London and start a new life there. He tells his Uncle Oswald goodbye and goes to London by himself.
The book was made into a movie in 1914. It starred Maurice Bertram as Gilbert Blythe and Ruth Gillette as Isabel Gracedew. The movie adaptation was not very popular and did not receive a wide release. It only played in a few cities in America for a short time. The movie was later re-released in 1932, but this time it was a success, and it released in many different cities, including New York City.
