The game's official website announced on September 17, 2016 that the game is developed by Bandai Namco Games in collaboration with CyberConnect2. The game is directed by Yōsuke Shikano, who worked on the "Street Fighter Alpha" series with the previous entries in the "Tekken" series. The game features five playable characters (2 new characters, 3 returning characters) and 12 characters overall with 6 new characters coming in the Deluxe Edition.
Three of the returning characters are part of the "Tekken" series' "Heavenly Body" series (specifically, Jin, Kazuya, and Heihachi Mishima) while Julia Chang (from "Tekken 2") and Lei Wulong (from "Tekken 3") make their debut. Former "Tekken" producer Katsuhiro Harada makes an appearance as a downloadable playable character, but he is not playable in the main story mode. He is playable in versus mode only.
The game's story takes place in 2032, eight years after the events of "Tekken 7".
