NU'EST used to be a duo consisting of JR and Ren, but they broke up in the fall of 2016, due to their different ambitions and goals in life. JR wanted to focus on his career as a singer, while Ren wanted to focus more on his modeling career, and pursue his passion for basketball.
JR received a lot of negative comments and criticism from the news media and the public, for not contributing to their agency, Jang Woong Entertainment (JW) and changing his group name from "JUNG-KOOK" (준국) to "NU'EST," and later on, "NU'EST W" (뉴이스트 W). JR was always the positive and optimistic member of the group, and he was the most vocal about their plight in the media.
Ren's decision to leave NU'EST caused a huge controversy in the Korean Entertainment Industry, with older artists and celebrities harshly criticizing him for leaving the group.
ChoI Min-ki (Hangul: 최민기,born November 3, 1995), better known by the stage name Ren (Hangul: 렌), is a member of South Korean boy band NU’EST. He is also known for competing in the 2017 series Produce 101 Season 2.
