C personality type is INFJ, and my youngest is ENTJ.
Why did you choose to focus on gender differences?
I am a research scientist, so I have a particular interest in understanding the causes of differences in behavior and social relationships. I think that biological differences between men and women might be important to understand.
I observed that people often assume that women are more emotional and men more rational, but that these differences are not as big as they think. When we look across all personality traits, there are no gender differences in the average level of emotional experience, and the same applies to thinking and empathy.
So I decided to look at the causes of these stereotypes. I think it is very interesting to understand how, for instance, men and women differ in their attachment styles, which has a strong impact on their behavior and social relationships.
Why do these stereotypes exist?
Psychologists believe that the stereotypes are sustained by social learning. People observe the behavior of others and then decide whether to emulate it or to develop their own style.
In the case of gender differences, these stereotypes are probably sustained by our upbringing. Parents can teach children different behaviors, based on the gender roles that have been constructed for them from birth.
