Shirin Ebadi was born in 1933 in Tabriz, Iran to a well-established family. Her father, a merchant, had left the family before Shirin was born, but her mother was an educated woman who ran a successful business in her home. Shirin was well educated and completed her high school education in Iran. She earned her BA degree from Tehran University in Political Science and History. She attended many lectures at Tehran University as a student, but soon became interested in law and started working as a law clerk. After finishing her law studies, she practiced law for several years.

However, Shirin quickly became disillusioned with the corruption of Iran’s legal system which she felt was not giving power to the people. She then became involved in the Islamic Revolution of 1979, which overthrew the Shah of Iran and established an Islamic Republic.
