I was an INFP from birth to my very late teens. I became an ISTJ in my 20s.
One of the reasons I was unemotionally so drawn to the ISTJ is that I saw so many of them in my life. I was a child and grown-up, husband and wife, sister and brother, and friend. I watched them live their lives without sentimentality, but with a strong connection to others, and I saw them do good for others, and with others, with a kind of internalized wisdom that I wanted to emulate.
ISTPs are great for working on this, since they comprise the most “heartless” personality type (not always literally heartless, but they do tend to be the least affected by emotional ties). ISTPs are also very good at being tough and tough-minded, which is a good combination for getting through the emotional stuff.
The next thing is to find a process that helps you express your feelings and make significant emotional connections with others. This can be done through counseling, therapy, or by just talking about how you feel and asking for advice.
