Mehmed III was the son of Süleyman I, the youngest son of Osman I. He succeeded his brother Mustafa as Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. After the death of his father Osman I, he became the heir to the throne. His succession to the throne was not undisputed, and a civil war ensued in 1444 between rival factions. The civil war lasted for five years, in which the Ottoman Empire was divided into three separate entities, each led by a rival of Seyyid Mehmed's. The Ottomans were defeated in the Battle of Varna in 1444, and this marked the end of the civil war.
Seyyid Mehmed defeated his Ottoman rivals to become the sole ruler of the Ottoman Empire in 1446. He negotiated a peace treaty with the Byzantine Empire in 1444, and was considered an ally of the Byzantine Empire against the Republic of Venice. He was the last Turkic ruler of Anatolia until the conquest of Anatolia by Sultan Mehmed II in 1453.
