He is not at all afraid to show his emotions, and can be very sentimental. He is very observant, and often seems to know what's going on before the other characters, though in some cases he may just be lucky.
His personality has been described as that of a "big brother", and he often acts as if he knows what's best for the other Straw Hats. He is also very protective of his crew mates, especially Nami and Usopp, and will do anything to defend them. He has always been willing to sacrifice himself for the sake of his crew, and has been willing to sacrifice his own life for them.
