Leilei and her husband, who is a policeman, came to Canada in 2007 because they were not able to find work in their home country of China.
“We like Canada, the people are nice, it's very safe,” Leilei says. “But one day we will go back to China.”
She wants to take care of her son Samuel, who is 20 years old and has cerebral palsy. His condition is the reason she has been unable to work for the past six years.
“I want for my son to go to university when he is 18 or at least get a job so he can support himself,” she says. “I want to send him money to pay for his education.”
While Leilei would like to see more government support for single mothers, she says she has noticed a change in attitudes with the younger generation.
