Gülendam has written a new book, "The Secret Life of the Cat" (HarperCollins, £12.99) which she describes as a "fascinating and wildly entertaining memoir of growing up with cats".
When she was 16, Gülendam was sent to boarding school in Germany by her parents. "It was the most incredible experience of my life. I loved every minute of it. I went from being a sheltered teenager in Turkey to suddenly being part of a whole different culture and school system.
"I learned so much from it and I was introduced to so many amazing people and animals. I spent the summer before starting the school with a family in Switzerland and, while I was there, I decided I wanted to be a veterinarian when I grew up. I then embarked on a career in nursing, which I love, but I always felt that I wanted to go back to my passion – to work with animals – and do something more serious."
She says she never felt any pressure to become the daughter of her father's business partner.
