A long-awaited study of nearly 1,000 people, including many University of California, Berkeley, students, has found that there are four distinct personalities: introverts, extroverts, thinking types and feeling types. These groupings correspond with the four letters of the Greek alphabet: I, E, S and F.
A new book about personality types argues that each personality is influenced by the combination of four basic traits:
Introversion (I): The tendency to focus on inner experiences and thoughts. Introverts may be more likely to think about the future or to ponder their own thoughts and feelings. They may show more concern for their own needs than other people's.
Extroversion (E): The tendency to focus on the outer world, to seek stimulation and to be more concerned with the people around them. Famous extroverts include entertainers like Pablo Picasso, President Theodore Roosevelt and Hugh Hefner.
Sensing (S): The tendency to focus on the senses, such as sight, hearing and touch, as well as being more sensitive to physical sensations.
