I chose to portray Longwell as a jock because I feel this is an accurate representation of his personality.
As a jock, Longwell had a reputation for being tough and efficient in his physical training. His brother was a high school football coach and Longwell was clearly the most talented player on the team. He excelled at every sport he played and was the leader of the team during his senior year.
Longwell decided to join the navy after high school and was stationed on the USS Nimitz from 1955 to 1958. During this time, he earned the rank of seaman apprentice and worked his way up to the rank of seaman third class and then seaman second class.
Longwell served on the Nimitz in the Pacific Ocean during the Korean War but did not see combat. He was stationed on board the carrier until his discharge in 1958.
After his discharge from the navy, Longwell went on to work as a police officer in Los Angeles for five years.
