Smith is also a competitive shooter, which she said gave her an edge when she began shooting at the age of nine. “We were shooting clay pigeons. I realized that [the gun] could be a little more accurate than I was [with] the pigeon,” said Smith.
Her father, a firearms enthusiast, taught her how to shoot when she was 12. By the time she was 15, she was shooting the .22 caliber and competing in local and regional shooting competitions.
“I was always better than everybody else because I had the background and the training,” said Smith. “I was really good at it and really loved it.”
Smith said she always knew she wanted to be a police officer because of her interest in guns and her affinity for police work.
