As I am still learning, I would prefer to point out the most important of his actions.
1. He received a very high-level education, which is unusual for his age.
2. He was arrested during the revolution of 1905. Lenin, at that time, was seeking to establish a secret police force, and he sent Gorsheniov to Petersburg to set up one of the first NKVD (later KGB) branches.
3. He became famous after the revolution as founder of the Cheka (later KGB). (Cheka means “secret police”)
4. He played a crucial role in establishing Soviet totalitarian propaganda. (He was the one who published an “Official Soviet White Book” on the German invasion of Russia.)
5. He played a significant role in the rise of Stalin (he was on the Committee of Bolsheviks which supported Stalin) and his own rise to leader of the NKVD.
