When Shenxiu was 16, he said he was forced to perform in a melee, where the audience was encouraged to jump onto the stage and attack him. In the melee, his guitar was torn from him and he was beaten with sticks and metal pipes.
He said it took him three years to recover from his injuries and another year before he could sing again.
“Even after I got through that, I had to go through another year of therapy,” Shenxiu said. “I didn’t want to be a singer anymore. I didn’t want to do this anymore.”
