Asperger's Syndrome (AS) is a neuro-developmental disorder, a possible variant of autism, which is marked by social and communication difficulties, repetitive behavior, and inflexible interests. It is not an official diagnosis in the United Kingdom or the United States, where it has been referred to as "Asperger's Disorder."
Asperger's Syndrome is a highly controversial label. The "syndrome" has been used in reference to a variety of conditions, most notably autism. The syndrome was first described by Austrian pediatrician Hans Asperger in 1944, who coined the term "autistic psychopathy." He was criticized for the use of the term "syndrome", which many regarded as a negative term. In 1980, Lorna Wing coined the term "Asperger's Disorder" to describe a similar set of symptoms in children with a normal IQ. In 1989, Tony Attwood placed Asperger's Syndrome in the category of Pervasive Developmental Disorder, Not Otherwise Specified (PDDNOS), and recognized it as a spectrum condition.
