From the first grade until high school, she attended the Ginásio de Criciúma, where she began training in judo at age eleven. In 1989, she moved to São Paulo to train at the Gracie Barra academy. She started training mixed martial arts with Rickson Gracie and under his tutelage and dedicated herself to becoming a world champion. She debuted as a professional fighter in October 1992 at an event promoted by the Gracie family, and fought for their "Black Belt" promotion. She left the promotion in 1995 and fought for other promotions such as the WFA, BJFC, and Pancrase. She also fought in Shooto Brazil, which included a match with the WEC's Megumi Fujii.
Known for her work ethic, Riveira is regarded as a tough fighter who is well-respected by both her opponents and her peers. Her matches with Megumi Fujii were particularly notable because they were non-title fights.
