Rene van der Gijp was born in Groningen as the son of a civil servant. He graduated from the HBS in Groningen with a Master of Science in economics. At the university he was an active member of the Students' Society of Economics and Chemistry (SCE) and the Socialist Student Federation (SSF). In 1968 he started working for the Groningen branch of the Dutch Labour Party. He was active in the youth organisation of the party, the Socialist Youth Organization (SYO), in which he became chairman.
