In the early days of their career, Cash was a bit of a wild child, and he even wrote a song that was about him getting into fights. In the mid-1970s, Cash started to mature into a family man. He married Vivian Liberto in 1978, and they had two children together.
Cash was an activist in his music, and he believed that music was important to young people. He also believed in helping others, and he was very charitable, donating money to musicians, musicians' widows and kids who had lost their parents in car accidents. He also helped the musicians who he worked with. One of his last concerts was in June 2003, and at the end of the show, many of his friends came up to the stage and gave him gifts, because he had helped them greatly in times past.
Shortly before his death in 2003, Cash was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
His death was reportedly due to complications from diabetes.
