Varg Vikernes was born in July 1974. He grew up in Bergen, Norway. He started out his career as a metal guitarist, but later became involved in the Norwegian black metal scene. Vikernes was able to build up a reputation as a musician. He started out as a guitarist for the band "Grave". He later formed the band Burzum, where he played bass guitar and vocals. Burzum was formed in 1993, and it became Norway's most infamous band. His first studio album, "Filosofem", was released in February 1995. Several other albums were released by Burzum throughout the 1990s, but Vikernes was arrested and sentenced to prison for committing arson in 1993. He was released in 2004, and was able to finish another album, "Burzum", which was released in August 2004. After being released from prison, Vikernes started working on the album "Blizzard Beasts", which was released in 2007.

In 1991, he founded the one-man music project Burzum, which is considered one of the most influential black metal acts. Three years later, he was convicted of murder and arson, and subsequently served over 14 years in prison.
