In the first game, the player's main objective is to befriend twelve animal partners and try to stop the Giant Bosses from destroying the island. If they do not succeed in this task, the island will be overrun by giant monsters and the player will be forced to leave the island.
The player must avoid the Giant Bosses' attacks, as well as other dangers such as falling rocks, toxic land, and a group of cannibalistic animals known as the "Night Slugs". While some of these animals can be befriended, some will attack the player on sight, and others cannot be befriended at all. Fluffy bunnies are invincible to attack and can be found in many places throughout the game; they will appear in a small area and follow you around until you open the door. The player can try to eat them to gain a small amount of health, but this will cause them to run away if they get too far away. If you look closely you can see a bunny peeking out from behind a rock.
The player can move around the island by crouching down and running. While running, the player can jump to avoid obstacles.
