Background
Dolokhov's father, General Kharitonov, was a follower of the Orthodox religion, but he kept his beliefs secret from Dolokhov, who was raised as a Catholic. He was rather close to his sister, Anna.
Dolokhov grew up in an aristocratic family, whose money came from trading with China. He had a rough childhood, though, his father beat him often, and he was sent to a boarding school for troubled children. While at school, Dolokhov proved to be an excellent student, and the headmaster asked the Dolokhov family to pay for the upkeep of the entire school. This man then became Dolokhov's mentor.
Dolokhov then joined the Russian Army, where he was assigned to the Semyonovsky Regiment. He quickly became known for his strength and skill with a sabre, but he also got into many fights. One time, while drunk, he broke into the church where his father was praying and insulted him.
