Endicott's father was an outdoorsman who didn't mind the outdoors. He took the family often on hiking adventures. From an early age, Endicott loved to go exploring in the woods. He always seemed to be "in his element" in the outdoors. Endicott would walk for miles, through the woods, down trails, and through rocks. On one of these outings he fell into a deep ravine, and was nearly killed. He broke his leg, and cut his head. It was days before he could get out of the hospital. After this incident, he was more careful when exploring the outdoors. He never did get over his fear of heights, however.

One day, when Endicott was around eight years old, he saw his father sit down at the chessboard with a book in his lap. He watched his father move the pieces left and right, then move them back to their original places.
