Sands has lived in Japan for more than 20 years, while also working as a staff writer for The Christian Science Monitor. He recently sent his agent a manuscript about the intelligence war in Japan, which he said was inspired by the intelligence war in the Korean Peninsula.
He wrote the book with his wife, Alisa Shulman Sands, who is a Japanese-American lawyer and former CIA officer. The book is expected to be published next year.
The CIA declined to comment on Sands’ CIA life and the book before it came out.
