Celia Cruz, a Puerto Rican singer and actress, was born on this day in 1939. At 13, she entered a talent contest at a local nightclub. She won first prize, and her parents paid for her to have lessons from a vocal coach. After winning a singing contest at a nightclub, Cruz entered a talent contest and was discovered by a talent scout. In the early 1950s she toured Europe with the Cuban-American singer Pérez Prado. She worked with Prado and other Latin American artists in various Latin American countries. She was known as "La Danta" (the dancer) and "La Dama de la Canción Latina" (the lady of the Latin song).
She had her first number-one hit in 1959 with "Guantanamera", and had ten more number-one hits in Cuba and Puerto Rico between 1959 and 1969. At the time of her death her records had sold over 60 million copies worldwide. Her albums were best sellers in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, El Salvador, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, and Venezuela.
