The work of Myers, Briggs and Myers in developing their theory of personality types has been very influential. This work came to the attention of Isabel Briggs Myers in 1935 when she was sent a volume from a publisher containing a series of letters in which a woman described her husband as a “Type F”. She soon became interested in the theory and in 1941 wrote a book about it, Gifts Differing. The publication of this book resulted in a flow of correspondence from individuals who had similar stories. She continued to explore the characteristics of type and their meaning and relevance to the people with whom they interacted.
In 1943 Isabel Briggs Myers died and was succeeded by Dorothy Sayers. She continued to explore the characteristics of type and to develop the theory. In 1948, she published a book called The Enneagram: An Introduction to the Personality Types and their Relation to the Christian Life and Christian Counselling (Penguin Books).
