Theodosius I was Emperor of the Eastern Roman Empire from February 15, 379 to November 17, 395.

Theodosius was born in Cauca, Hispania (Spain) to a wealthy family of Italian origin.

When he was young, his family moved to Constantinople, the capital of the Empire. His father was an important dignitary in the imperial court.

One of his brothers was later elected as Western Roman Emperor.

Theodosius also had two sisters, Pulcheria and Flaccilla.

One of his sisters, Pulcheria, would later become Empress of the Eastern Roman Empire under the reign of her son Arcadius.

Theodosius was highly educated, having been tutored by the most prominent men of the empire including the biographer Procopius, the philosopher Aelius Donatus, and the historian Paulus Orosius.

They helped him to develop his mind and help him to pursue a career in public service.

He would go on to serve as a high-ranking official in the government for many years.

Theodosius I (January 347 – 17 January 395), also known as Theodosius the Great, was a Roman Emperor from 379 to 395, and the last emperor to rule over both the Eastern and the Western halves of the Roman Empire. On accepting his elevation, he campaigned against Goths and other barbarians who had invaded the Empire. His resources were not sufficient to destroy them or drive them out, which had been Roman policy for centuries in dealing with invaders. By treaty, which followed his indecisive victory at the end of the Gothic War, they were established as foederati, autonomous allies of the Empire, south of the Danube, in Illyricum, within the Empire's borders. They were given lands and allowed to remain under their own leaders, a grave departure from Roman hegemonic ways.

He issued decrees that effectively made Nicene Christianity the official state church of the Roman Empire (Edict of Thessalonica; Codex Theodosianus XVI. 1.2).
