Gloria Estefan was a singer, actress, dancer and businesswoman who was named one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century by Time magazine. She was also the first Latin American entertainer to amass a number one album on the Billboard 200 chart. Estefan was born in working class East Miami Beach, Florida, to a Cuban father who had come to the United States by boat following Fidel Castro's takeover of Cuba in 1959. Her mother was born in Spain and raised in Puerto Rico. Estefan’s parents were both singers; her father was a member of a popular Cuban group called Los Van Van. Estefan’s family moved frequently, and she later recalled this phenomenon as a backdrop for her creativity, as she would make up stories about the different towns she lived in at the time and incorporate them into her songs. At age 4, Gloria moved to California with her family, and she first began singing in church choirs at an early age. In the 1970s, she became a member of a funk band called The Miami Sisters (the band name was later changed to Miami Sound Machine).
