The original character, Lúthien Tinúviel is the daughter of the Elven King Thingol and Melian the Maia. She's also the half-sister of Beren and Lúthien, although she doesn't know about Beren at all.
Born in Gondolin, she was raised by Thingol in Doriath. As she grew older, she became increasingly unhappy in her adoptive home.
She escaped Doriath in TA 2990 after the Dagor Bragollach and Eönwë took her to Nargothrond. She was eighteen when she left, which makes her roughly five hundred years old when she arrives in Mirkwood.
Unlike Beren or Lúthien, who were both given the name "Lúthien Tinúviel" by Tolkien, Lúthien Tinúviel was born with this name; she was just called "Tinúviel" by her parents.
