And given that he's now one of the top researchers in his field, can you really blame him for being excited about what he's doing? If he's interested in working on something and he's told me that he's doing so, then I'm pretty sure he'll stick with it.
And it's not like you can't be a scientist if you're not interested in the subject matter. I'm sure there are plenty of people who are very knowledgeable about the subject matter but not particularly interested in doing research on it.
Your father is right to be proud of his son. But maybe you could try to think of this as a "learning experience" rather than a "failure" or something negative. You were never going to be a scientist like your father - that was never going to be your career option! - but maybe you can think of it as a valuable lesson on how not to do it in the future.
