Pfitzner, who lived in St. Louis until his death in 1956, was a successful businessman and civic leader, the founder of a radio station and the founder and president of Pfitzner Inc., which grew into one of the largest bakery companies in the Midwest.
In addition to his business interests, Pfitzner was active in the St. Louis Symphony Orchestra, where he had served as president since 1931. He also served on the board of directors of the St. Louis Art Museum and was instrumental in establishing the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
But his greatest legacy may be the award-winning children's book series "Little House on the Prairie." His daughter, Laura Ingalls Wilder, was a pseudonym for her mother, actress Mary Ingalls.
