Ranma at the end of the day is simply a guy who is trying to get his life back together after a lot of pain and heartbreak. He’s made a lot of mistakes in the past, but he’s tried to work things out.
He’s been through enough to know that he’s not a complete asshole, but he’s not ready to just sit back and accept being friends with Akane. He’s also done a lot of stupid things in the past, but he’s been redeemed.
It’s just that he’s a character who is in a constant state of flux. Sometimes he is trying to stay a good person, other times he isn’t. It’s a character trait that I think is best shown by his reactions to Ranma and Akane’s breakups throughout the series.
In the first half of the series, his reactions show a lot of love and consideration for Akane. In the second half, he seems much more harsh and cold towards her.
